No More B.S.!

I've been thinking about writing this post for a few days now, but have not wanted to fan the flames.

I can't hold back any longer, though.

As I've stated many times on this blog and our podcast, I've enjoyed this season more than any of the last handful. This was mainly because there weren't any returning players to temper and handicap the play of the new contestants. With the exception of one stunt casting, and a twist designed to protect her, everybody started the season on an even keel.

Yes, there have been a ton of questionable comments and actions. Yes, some people have acted inappropriately. Yes, people have made disastrous moves. That's what happens when you have a cast of reality show virgins! You get drama! Isn't that what has been missing in previous years? People should be rejoicing!

They're not. In fact, I've never seen a season where the fanbase has taken the show so seriously. I'm not just talking about the cat ladies who want rules tweaked, bent and broken to ensure their favorite makes it untouched to the end. I'm not talking about the usual double standards for behavior, or the demand that the rest of the house do nothing but what furthers their hero.

It's getting much scarier than that, and it needs to stop.

There are sites out there created by people that clearly have too much time on their hands. These sites include private information of not only those in the house but their families and friends. When one brain surgeon tweeted a family phone number earlier this week, they were inundated with harrassing phone calls for the rest of the day.

Seriously, you cretins, get a fucking life.

You can love and hate anybody you want. You can think this person is trash, or that person is a beautiful angel. That's part of the fun of the show.

When they're out of the house, you can then throw whatever verbal jabs you want. I've admittedly had my fun with certain people over the years. No matter their sins, though, the families don't deserve this. Their parents shouldn't have to take down their business websites or disconnect their phones. You are NOT their judge and jury.

You, not those in the house, are ruining this season. If the show doesn't return next summer, I hope you all look at yourselves in the mirror. It won't be because of the ratings or the various live feed controversies. It will because you busy bodies are giving the producers and lawyers such a headache it won't be worth the risk of putting on the air. Will you be happy then? Either that or it will be a house full of Helen's organizing knitting parties. We definitely don't need that!

I so agree with everything you said. I am enjoying this season. It has been entertaining. I think fans need to understand it is a game. I want the best player to win. #teamjulissa

In showbusiness any attention, good or bad, is good for the is attention. These people signed up for it. They may have wanted to think about how their remarks may affect their families. The continuation of such remarks only shows their ignorance and lack of concern for their family. There is a large price to pay for those actions, but lets be honest, they know they are being recorded. This is part of what continues to make the show so interesting. It is amazing what comes out when you lock people in a house. Not all of it is pleasant.

The only thing REALLY wrong (in the house) about this season is the way that Amanda is acting. I can see Aaryn, and GM being racists and Spencer trying to be a comedian, whose jokes fall flat; BUT I cannot see anybody threatening bodily harm to the other houseguests. That is just not gameplay, it is positively criminal. This is my first season with Live Feeds, but if the show continues I will continue, as it makes the televised episodes even funnier than they would be without it. I agree that there should not be any attacks on the families of ANY of the houseguests. I would say that GM and Amanda really do not know how to play the game, if they are (and they are) attacking families.

From a family member of one of the houseguests, thank you.

Thank you for writing this. The behavior of the fans this seasons has been outrageous. It makes me want Amanda to win just to piss all of them off.

I agree but when Hgs say they want to slice someones throat or rape or kill someone a line needs to be drawn. would anyone liked to be threatened with bodily harm in real live, NO, you phone the police. in BB house the police are BB who do nothing to stop it. Game, wait this reality show has some interesting Hgs and sure the viewers, like myself, are watching for the evil Hgs to be evicted

this post hit the nail on the head.its funny the ones who make the sites and put out personal info.prove by doing so they are just as vile and hateful as the people they are attacking.its always funny how that works.also you go on jokers before the start of any season.all you see are posts about how they hope there is no rigging and posts about how they want drama.then every year when they get it.they complain about it and want the person who causes drama kicked out and want AG to rig for their favorite.who by the way most the time ends up being someone who sucks at the game.see jeff and see elissa this year

I think I just fell in love. In fact, my son and I just had this conversation at the dinner table tonight. ^5 and thank goodness someone finally said it!

You have an excellent point, leave families out if this, they did not come on the show. Calling police because of a disgusting comment is going to far. The house guests will face their demons when they emerge to the real world, thats enough for me.I have enjoyed 15 seasons as well as the live feeds and do worry fanatics will ruin this for all. Get a grip this is a game not "real life", they will face that soon enough.

Excellent post. At the end of the day, it's a game. The behavior of some fans is far more reprehensible than any of the antics of the house guests. Hate never accomplishes anything. It just breeds more hate. We could all use a lot more love and tolerance.

I soo agree wish all could see this maybe then they would think about what their actions could cost all of us who love bb

I totally agree. This is a game and some people think they are holier than thou and never make mistakes. This game is full of back stabbing and HG gets attacked for lashing out after a twist BB does that screws their game. Everyone in there it is a dream come true for them and BB screws them with a twist it to help a fan favorite.
Either way BB is a game and the families should be no part of the game...and after the BB game is over leave the HGs alone, they are playing a game and they are all playing with high emotions and say and do things they would not do out of the house I'm sure.
Fans that threaten families are worse than any HS ever!! If you can't take this game as a game maybe you shouldn't watch. No TV show will ever become so important to me that I threaten a person for it EVER!! Get a life people!

I agree with your comments about not harassing the families of the contestants 100%. It's uncalled for, immature and harassment. It makes them no better than the people they claim to hate. I disagree that if the show is cancelled, it's the fault of the people who have had issues with the bigotry and flat out cruelty that has been exhibited during this season, however. We teach our kids not to stand by and watch people be harassed and bullied, and it's only fitting that we live up to those examples ourselves, as adults.

Obviously, as a fan of the show, I don't want Big Brother to be cancelled. I just want CBS to learn their lesson and do a better job next year. IF the show IS cancelled, however, it will be because of how poorly they managed this season. The ratings are up due to the controversy, but once people who don't normally watch the show go away and the people who were disgusted by this season don't come back, the ratings may be lower than ever before next year. Again, if that happens, it's not OUR fault for having a problem with the vile ugliness of talking about gang raping and murdering one contestant and calling another contestant a crackbaby because she is biracial and was placed for adoption.

A lot of ugliness has unfolded this season and I, for one, am happy that people have been so vocal about their displeasure. No one should have to go through what Candice did in that house and anyone who doesn't think that it had a negative effect on her ability to play the game is fooling themselves. I only hope that the worst offenders of this season leave the house and LEARN something from this experience, versus making excuses and trying to justify it.

After reading what you posted, I am sure that you have just as little time on your hands, and you need to get a life.
If you find racism, bigotry, and bullying entertainment, then I call you an ignorant barbarian.
Yes, this year is very entertaining, but it also shows that a network will do anything to boost ratings, and mean spirited, backwards thinking morons such as yourself would find that great television.
It baffles me that we have advanced in technology, but emotionally and spiritually we as a people have regressed, and become more polarized.
You write about the people who cheer on their heroes, and cry about how the rules are skewed, but where is your cry for the sheer and utter disregard for the thought of others feelings?
Thank you for making me laugh, and continue my thoughts on human relations in the United States, which are lacking in compassion.
By the way, The Big Brother in Canaba and England would have never allowed some of the deplorable things that happened in this season's Big Brother.
I guess those two countries are less diversified than our great country, or maybe they are more diversified, and tolerant of others.

I agree, families are OFF LIMITS, they did not sign up for this, but as a loyal fan of BB and a live feeder I did not sign up for this vile disgusting behavior. The language is one thing, sex, well Ill' skip that, but the talk of rape and killing and the bullying has got to stop. BB is a game of lies and manipulation that is a given, and comes with the territory. Bullying is a big issue in our society and we all know the sad stories of what happens to people that have been bullied not to mention what some of them have done. If CBS really CARED they would have stopped this when the bullying first started it has gone way beyond a game this season and it's not fun anymore. Allowing Bullies to continue in the game of BB shows future bullies that their behavior could possibly win them $500K. GOOD JOB CBS

THANK YOU! I've left most of the sites or updates I used to receive because of this very reason. You're not allowed an opinion that doesn't agree with theirs. I honestly believe some of these so-called *fans* won't be satisfied until there is a suicide of a houseguest. It has happened on an international version.
Threats need to be said to someone's face and the person receiving the threat has to believe there is a real possibility that the threat would be carried out. So people need to just CHILL OUT!
Send any rude rebuttals to the proverbial circular bin. Peace out!

CBS ought to do an 'aftershow' of sorts, wherein they follow the house guests around with cameramen capturing what life is like immediately post-season. Especially with this season, which has had so many controversial members. If CBS gave us this 'after show' it would not only give BB watchers an opportunity to really see what the cast members, and their families, experience as a result of the show, but perhaps garner sympathy or whatever it is that will deter fans from harassing. It may be sort of cathartic for us fans to see the difficulties our most hated (or our most loved) cast members have to deal with on a day to day basis because of being on BB. If nothing else, a 'life after BB' show would be entertaining - albeit in a real housewives of X sort of way.
August 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMegsie
You're absolutely right. And what's worse, is that the people most up in arms have no idea that this is mild in comparison to some seasons.

Amanda's "threats" are not serious. She's not "on the verge" of physically hurting anyone. She's not even close. How quickly do we forget that last season Willie Hantz headbutted someone? Or in season 2, a knife was held up to a girl's throat?

And yet it's Amanda getting all of this hatred for what is clearly an act, a blatant Evel Dick.

You heard Aaryn in the DR the other night: no one likes Elissa. If you had to spend a summer cooped up with Elissa, you'd want to to threaten her too!

The reaction of the fans this season is shameful.

Few things are as amusing to me as reading some of the comments in here, and seeing fans perpetuate the very behaviors that Scott is writing about in this post.

Disagree with him? Well, then you insult him and call him names rather than have an intelligent discourse.

Don't like something he or any other blogger reports from the house? Clearly it's the blogger's fault, and they should be attacked mercilessly.

Don't like a Houseguest? Well, they signed a release to be on the show, so obviously that means that they and their families should be harassed and threatened.

Feel like a strategy that a Houseguest is using doesn't jibe with your beliefs or feelings about fairness? Clearly they should be kicked off of the show because of it.

Or, maybe we should all just freaking relax a little bit. We spend so much time invested in watching this show that it's understandable that we get emotionally invested in it. That being said, we should not - under any circumstances - start threatening the lives and livelihoods of those involved in the show because of it. To do this says more about your need to invest a little less in the show than their actions in the first place.

Oh, and perhaps we should calm down about bad behavior in the house a little bit - no matter who is the perpetrator. It's perfectly understandable to have favorites and people you don't like, but attacking someone because you don't like what they're doing? Harassing their family members? Threatening their ability to actually get a job or way of living after this? That crosses the line, big time.

I've been a fan since BB1, a BB blogger for three years and a BB podcaster/online radio guy for two years. The fandom has gotten worse and worse with the expansion of internet anonymity over that time, and the bad behavior has surpassed anything done in the House. We just really need to chill, lest our bad behavior do what the Houseguests' bad behavior has never done - taken the show off the air.

I truly hope that they do pull the plug on Big Brother. Enough is enough. 14 seasons, is plenty. This year I would not even count. Good Bye Big Brother.

I so agree that having all "newbies" makes for a much better show; I do not like returning houseguests!
August 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBeth
I agree with you! Families, friends, significant others are off limits. This years BB fans/watchers have been crazy. I don't tweet that often, but if I tweet my opinion on a BB player and someone doesn't like it, I get yelled at or they try and pick a fight. I really have been trying to censor my tweets and posts to facebook pages and blogs because I don't like getting harassed because I have an opinion as a BB fan.
I can only image what the families are going through. I think the BB crazies need to take a page out of Judd's book and just take a Xanax and relax. BB after all is just a game.
