If you're a subscriber to the Big Brother Gossip Show via iTunes you may have seen some files downloaded today. No, we haven't recorded any new epsiodes yet. That will begin next weekend.
Let me explain and apologize.
Podcast feeds have very rigid rules, but unfortunately there is no "rulebook" to help guide us.
To understand what has happened, one must understand our show's history. It all begins when I started my music show, The Ledge. As part of the realpunkradio network, I joined a host site, Mevio, that most of the other DJ's used. It was not only free, but offered unlimited downloads. It also provided some great info on download numbers and bandwidth used.
When we began the Big Brother Gossip Show three seasons ago, it made sense to utilize Mevio as our host. This was fine for the first season, but there was a user outtage that took all of our shows offline for a time. All of us at realpunkradio then banded together to create our own host that not only housed our shows but created our own podcast feeds. Thus, our shows started over with a new account on iTunes and Stitcher.
Mevio came back to life, though, and because of the stats info I began using them again. The Mevio links were inserted into the new feeds, although I continued to upload them into our realpunkradio space. This past winter, however, Mevio announced that they were no longer going to host podcasts. I was upset to learn that I'd no longer have access to their data, but I didn't think it was that big of a deal. I simply changed the file links in my feeds, and thought nobody would ever know the difference.
Unfortunately, you can't change this data in podcast feeds. Once a feed "enclosure" is pointed to a file's location, it can't be altered. I was unaware of this, and for month have assumed everything is running fine. As we get closer to the new season, though, i became aware that people were getting error messages on this site and also on iTunes. Somehow the files still played on Stitcher, though.
Earlier today, I was forced to create brand new posts for each of the last two seasons of the Big Brother Gossip Show. All of these are noted by the addition of (Re-up) at the end of show names. If you're a subscriber, at least one of these episodes were automatically downloaded to iTunes. Again, my apologies. It was the only solution to address the situation.
Just one more reminder - we'll be using a different service, Mixlr, to live-stream our show this summer. Unlike ustream, Mixlr doesn't insert ads and they have an iPhone app that allows you to listen live from anywhere. I'll have more detailed info next weekend shortly before we go live. Thanks for your support!
