Big Brother Season 16, Episode 24 Recap

Watching the Sunday episode is always interesting. Sometimes it’s even infuriating. Ok, quite often, actually.

As I’ve said before, the Sunday broadcast primrarily consists of footage from a 24-hour period, starting with the conclusion of Thursday’s eviction show to Friday afternoon’s Battle of the Block. Anything not from that time period is either flown in footage from previous days (such as much of the year’s phony Hayden/Nicole “showmance”), or material designed to explain what we’re seeing.

The problem for me is that due to the Big Brother Gossip Show, I’ve already spent hours with these events. If I’m not cutting audio to use on the show, I’m watching and rewatching in order to understand what I’m going to talk about on Saturday night.

My anger is when this material is manipulated to show something different than what actually happened. Quite often, somebody gets a more positive edit, or the wrong person is given credit for something they had a minimal part in the acts.

Tonight it’s quite possible this could happen again. While what actually happened is pretty cut and dry, there is a great possibility the wrong house guest will be shown as a hero and/or a villain. I hope that’s not the case, but we all know how CBS works these days.

So let’s get started, and let’s also pray that there’s no egregious examples of selective editing. Derrick and Frankie are shown winning HOH, and of course Frankie is so excited. The downside is that with so few people left, a few people from his alliance will have to go up and “some feathers will definitely be ruffled”. Caleb still believes the Bomb Squad is in existence, and says that Donny is their number one target. Derrick, though, claims that he will play up to the fact that his pals want Donny and Victoria on the block, but “with that being said (ugh), I don’t want either of them to go home”. Christine’s only hope is the fact that since she sent home her only friend they’ll keep her safe this week.

Donny is now shown feeling sad because he knows he is going on the block. “I’m definitley outnumber, but I’m not out yet.”

In the bathroom, Derrick is already starting to set up what he wants to see happen. He explains to the boys that it’s going to be complicated, and Cody says that he wants to see Zach and Donny up. Derrick replies that they have to make Zach volunteer to be nominated. Caleb adds that somebody has to be next to Zach that will throw the comp, but he wants nothing to do with it. He is the “founder” of the Bomb Squad, after all, so he could be losing trust if they make him go up once again. Cody is also not crazy about throwing a comp. Derrick says they need to have everybody get together to figure out the logistics.

Frankie then enters, and Derrick tells them that they’re going to tell Victoria that she’s safe this week. Frankie thinks that’s a great idea for her “to be safe this week...for now”. Victoria then enters, and is told the news. Obviously, she’s excited.

We move to the fire room, and Victoria runs in and hugs Derrick to say thanks. He says that he just told them there’s no way she’s going up this time. “Really?” She says in the dairy room that she has complete faith in Derrick. “I’m happy”, she tells him. “I love you.”

Frankie and Derrick then go into the hive room to figure out what to do. Derrick tells Frankie that he trusts him more than anybody, and it’s partly due to the bond they have because of their grandfather’s deaths. “I don’t think you’ll ever go against that.” Derrick wants to stay HOH, and Frankie agrees since he’s the only person “I trust 100%”. They move on to who they want next to Donny on the block, and all fingers point to Cody since he’s never been nominated. Derrick’s not that crazy about this idea, though, since he has a final two deal with Cody (and almost everybody else). They again talk about havnig a meeting to decide who is going to “bite the bullet this week”.

Ugh, HOH room reveal time. Excuse me as I fast forward, especially after hearing Frankie hoot and holler because he gets to see his stupid sister, Ariana.

After this awful moment, Donny pulls Derrick aside to talk about the week. Derrick says that he’s not the target of either him or Frankie, and Derrick adds that he is pretty much just telling Donny what he wants to hear. He even throws out the Team America silliness, and eventually Donny concedes that he has to go up.

Speaking of Team America, it’s time for Derrick to get this week’s task. Yep, another waste of valuable air time, as they have to hide pieces of clothing from every house guest. Oh yeah, and create a “nieghborhood watch”. It’s dumb, no matter what Derrick reads from his diary room script. Derrick first tells Frankie about the mission, and then Donny. Wake me when this is over.

We jump ahead to the middle of the night, and the boys are all deciding who is going to go up. Frankie describes how they need to keep Veronica off the block so that they have a backup nominee. To do this, one person has to go up with Donny and throw the BOB.

Zach immediately speaks up and says that at this stage in the game he doesn’t feel comfortable throwing a competition. Neither does an angry Caleb, Christine, or Cody. Frankie says there are “no other options”...and the conversation gets extremely quiet. Zach finally says that they have to play “rock, paper, scissors” to decide, and Caleb still feels that because he’s already done it in the past he shouldn’t have to do it this time. Zach needs to go up, and Caleb promises to keep him.

They finally decide on drawing Skittles. Yep, that’s what this season has come down to. As we described on last night’s Big Brother Gossip Show, they made their nomination plans based on pulling Skittles. They all pick colors, and Christine’s purple candy is drawn first. She’s not happy about this, obviously. Caleb and Cody’s candy pieces are the next two, so they will be the other side. Nobody’s happy that Zach’s piece of candy wasn’t pulled, especially Caleb who doesn’t trust him as far as he could throw a body. “Maybe three or four feet.”

One would think this means we get the nomination ceremony after this, but instead we get some Frankie/Zach romance. I’m over it. Really. There’s no need, especially since Frankie has been the worst friend possible for Zach. It goes on to the boys gossiping about Cody and Christine, which I also don’t need to endure.

Back to game stuff, and Caleb is still bitching about Zach. He knows that Zach doesn’t like him, and because of this Caleb wants him out more than Veronica. He also understands that Zach will probably nominate him if he becomes HOH. Cody chimes in that he wouldn’t mind seeing Zach leave either, and Derrick says in the diary room that he likes the way this conversation is going as he doesn’t want either Donny or Velouria to go home. If Donny wins the BOB, then Caleb wants Zach to be backdoored.

More adverts, and Donny now comes in to talk to Frankie and Derrick. He’s told that Victoria is the true target, which is why she’s being kept off the block for now. He’s also informed of the Skittles draw, and how everybody but him was there for the draw. Donny is not happy by this, and now knows for sure that those two are working together. He’s told to win Battle of the Block, but admits in the diary room that “having my fate decided by color coded candy lets me know that I am expendable by the other members of Team America”.

Finally, it’s nomination time. We already know who they are, so this is just a formality for the cameras. Even the “reasons” are formalities of nothingness. Afterwards, Derrick and Cody head into the storage room, and Cody is informed that they don’t believe the story he was told in the HOH.

One more set of adverts and we get the Battle of the Block that Christine is supposed to throw to ensure that Donny stays on the block. There’s a pitch black building in the back yard, and they must find bones hidden in the box. One team is gonig for stars bones; the other for circles...and some don’t fit at all. The first team to get five bones wins.

As always, we get comment after comment about the importance of this competition, and they are finally led inside. The bell sounds, and they’re bombarded with gunk as they blindly look around. Cody and Caleb decide to work hand in hand, literally, and head to the board whenever they have two bones. Unfortunately, Caleb grabbed a bone that doesn’t fit into the puzzle. Meanwhile, Christine plays dumb while Donny is working hard. Christine thinks this is great, as it’s not hard at all to throw this competition. Donny then gets a bone, and the other boys get their second. The humorous music comes on as Donny fumbles around various objects before finding a second bone. Donny hands Christine a bone, but Caleb grabs it from her. (Hmmm, according to their commentary afterwards, production yelled that Christine can’t hand bones to the other side.)

Ok, this is getting boring. Caleb is continuing to have problems, and is reading way too many production one liners in the diary room. They get their third bone up, but Donny has grabbed his fourth bone. He also now understands that because he is the only one who has inserted the bones that Christine is throwing this competition. He must now hurry to find the winning bone as he’s working alone. Christine hands the boys one more bone, but Donny has found the fifth bone...and wins the competition!

This is clearly the worst result for the boys (and Christine), so we get more commentary on how their plans to throw competitions is just not working for them.

That’s it for tonight! What did you think? I must say that outside of production reportedly yelling at Christine and Caleb during BOB, the happenings were somewhat fairly represented. Do you agree? Let us know what you think!
